The Truth Behind Santorini’s Blue Dome Churches

Scroll down to content

Truth about blue dome churches in Santorini. It could seem that they are everywhere, but..

…there aren’t as many of them as it might seem. The blue domes of the churches that have become the hallmark of Santorini are rather a well-created image that is actively replicated on social media and tourist guides. There are indeed several iconic churches with blue domes on the island, such as the Church of the Resurrection of the Lord in Imerovigli or the Church of Agios Spyridon in Oia, but their number is limited. Most churches on Santorini are as white as the buildings surrounding them. Many visitors are surprised to find that blue domes aren’t on every corner of the island, despite how common they appear online.

The same churches, like the famous Three Blue Domes in Oia, can be photographed from different angles, creating the illusion that every corner of the island is dotted with such buildings.

If you are heading to Santorini in search of these famous views, be prepared for the fact that finding the perfect “postcard” shot may be a bit more difficult than it seems. Not all blue dome churches are located at the edge of a cliff and provide opportunity for a great shot. Popular locations such as Oia or Imerovigli are often overcrowded with tourists, and to catch that perfect shot without the crowds, you will either have to get up at dawn or seek out lesser known corners of the island. Great options could be the Church of Panagia ton Eisodion in Megalochori or the Church Mother of Lord Theoskepasti on Skaros rock.

Interestingly, the tradition of painting the domes blue is linked to local beliefs and aesthetics: blue symbolizes the sky and sea surrounding the island, and is often associated with spiritual purity.

So, Santorini’s blue domed churches are more than just Instagram stars – they’re a vibrant piece of the island’s heart, tying the sea and sky to its spiritual roots. While they’re not everywhere, discovering them is worth it for that magical view. So grab your camera, wander the whitewashed streets, and let these iconic domes spark your Santorini adventure!

    1. Thank you India. Many visitors are surprised to learn that while Santorini has around 600 churches, most of them are small, private, and tucked away—very different from the iconic blue-domed ones people often picture. These famous spots are limited and often part of specific villages :)

      1. That’s so fascinating, Anna! It makes me appreciate those hidden little churches even more, they must feel like secret treasures waiting to be found. Thanks for sharing your insight! 🙂
