Greece for honeymoon. Which island to visit?

So, the long-awaited event happened – you got married, put the rings on your fingers, and can rightfully call yourself spouses! And ahead – a romantic honeymoon in Greece, which must be spent in a way that it will be remembered for a lifetime! Greece offers countless possibilities for you to spend the sweetest time together, enjoying each other’s company and completely surrendering to those activities and hobbies that are close to both of you.

Santorini has a beauty that cannot be found anywhere else in the world, and Mykonos is a bustling and cosmopolitan island. Sifnos offers many activities to help you unwind, and Folegandros has somehow managed to escape the effects of mass tourism. These four islands are just a few of the wonderful places to visit in the Cyclades on your honeymoon.

Santorini: In search of romance

Santorini is considered the most desirable romantic getaway in Greece. There are not so many places in the world where you can enjoy the sea while sitting on the edge of an active volcano. The island solidifies its reputation as a wedding destination for couples from all over the world, not just Greece. Traveling to Santorini with a soul mate is a dream come true for everyone who has seen at least one photo of the island’s famous caldera and the sunset.

Fira, the island’s picturesque capital is located high on the edge of the caldera and seems to have been created by an artist’s brush. Villages of Fira, Oia, Imerovigli, and Firostefani are located high on the cliffs, forming the “Santorini balcony”, with stunning views of the volcano. Can’t decide on where to stay in Santorini, – Oia or Fira? Here you can read a bit more detailed compensation of these two little towns.

A visit to Santorini will give you an unforgettable gastronomic experience, as the island is considered a real gourmet paradise! Spoil yourself with the famous traditional products: cherry tomatoes, white eggplants, fava beans, capers and a special kind of fresh goat cheese. Why not try some of the outstanding wines made from grapes that grow in volcanic soil? Want something more traditional? Here is a short guide to traditional food restaurants in Santorini.

Explore the treasures of the Santorini coastline and dive into the deep blue of the caldera along beaches of white, red, black sand, and volcanic rocks, surrounded by striking rock formations.

Cosmopolitan Mykonos

The most cosmopolitan island of the Cyclades is also the ideal destination for a  honeymoon. Mykonos is the island that never sleeps. Every year celebrities from all over the world gather on its shores. This place is simply meant to organize the honeymoon trip you’ve always dreamed of. Take some time to admire the architectural style of the main town Chora, it’s freshly whitewashed houses that look like sugar cubes, and take a walk in the labyrinth of alleys and along Matoyianni Street, the most famous street on the island. It’s full of shops belonging to the world’s leading fashion houses and jewelry brands. There are excellent gourmet restaurants throughout the island, ready to offer unforgettable gastronomic delights. Indulge in the luxury offered by top-class hotels, along with the beauty of the island’s beaches. Some of the best hotels are located in Agios Ioannis, Ornos, and near the magnificent beaches of Platis Yialos and Elia. You should, of course, also swim at other famous beaches – Super Paradise, Kalo Livadi, Panormos, Ftelia and Psarou. It goes without saying that you should spend the nights in the island’s world-famous bars and clubs!

Sifnos: A world of harmony

Wind-sheltered beaches and numerous bays of Sifnos, uniquely beautiful villages, and countless Cycladic churches create a unique environment that is harmonious in itself and is the ideal honeymoon destination where body and soul can relax under deep blue skies. On the island of Sifnos, famous for the early 20th-century Greek chef Nikolaos Tselementes, you can taste some exceptional dishes prepared by award-winning chefs who know how to surprise. Visit the medieval village of Kastro and experience the untamed power and charm of the Aegean Sea. If you want to be close to the sea, choose one of the hotels in Vathi, or if you prefer the splendor and harmony of neoclassical mansions, it’s recommended staying in picturesque Artemonas, whose courtyards are overflowing with flowers and offer breathtaking views. And don’t miss swimming in the sparkling blue waters at Chrysopigi, Vathi and Kamares!

Folegandros: A paradise away from the crowds

If you really want to relax and unwind after your stressful wedding preparations, why not escape to Folegandros… Little was done on this island to promote tourism, and what was done did not conflict with the local Cycladic style. The main town of Chora is surrounded by steep cliffs. This residential area is unlike any other in its purest Cycladic style. The view from the castle in Pounta Square, a quiet lunch break in the shade in Dounavi Square, the Church of Panagia that rises majestically on a rocky pedestal, and the evening noise in the lively Piatsa Square all create a cozy atmosphere. The many hotels, which have been built in accordance with modern design trends, are positioned in a specific way so you can enjoy the endless blue of the Aegean sea in peace and quiet. The crystal clear waters of Agali, Katergo and Livadi sparkle under the Mediterranean sun. They are waiting for you!
