Best Sunset Spots Without the Crowds: Alternative Locations Outside of Oia

Oia is an iconic spot to enjoy the sunset in Santorini, but crowds and overcrowded viewpoints can spoil the experience. If you’re looking for a secluded, yet equally picturesque spot to watch the sunset from, I’m here to help you find alternative locations outside of Oia, where you can enjoy the magic of the evening sky in a peaceful setting.

Sunset in Oia, Santorini. Windmills, city lights and blue hotel pools.

Imerovigli.

Located between Fira and Oia, Imerovigli offers stunning views of the caldera. It’s less crowded than Oia, but the sunsets are just as beautiful.

Best spot – Skaros Rock. A short walk from the center of Imerovigli will take you to the ruins of a medieval fortress. Find a secluded spot on the cliff to watch the sunset overlooking the volcano and the Aegean Sea. Bring a blanket and a bottle of local wine for a romantic atmosphere.

Akrotiri.

An archaeological site and village in the south of the island, where there are significantly less tourists.

Best spot – Akrotiri Lighthouse. It’s best to rent a car to get here. Located on the south-western edge of the island, the lighthouse offers panoramic sunset views without huge crowds. Arrive 30-40 minutes before the sunset to secure a spot. There are small tavernas nearby for a bite to eat after sunset.

Pyrgos.

A traditional village located on a hill, Pyrgos offers a spectacular view of the island and the sunset.

Best spot – Franco’s Cafe. It features an open terrace offering panoramic views of the island. Book a table in advance to enjoy signature cocktails and a light snack while watching the island change colors with the setting sun!

For a bit of a different experience head up the hill towards Profitis Ilias monastery. This is the perfect place for those who want peace and panoramic views. In the spring and late October make sure to bring a light jacket as it can be windy at altitude.

Megalochori.

A charming village with narrow streets and wineries. The sunsets here can be enjoyed surrounded by vineyards, away from the tourist routes.

Best Spot – Venetsanos Winery. Situated on the edge of the caldera, this winery offers stunning sunset views. Book a table or simply enjoy the view from the terrace.

Book a sunset cruise on a sailing boat or catamaran that will take you to some of the best spots around the island and caldera. You will visit the Red Beach, White Beach, take a swim in the hot springs of the volcano island. Finish the day bathing in the rays of the setting sun, while being served dinner on board.

Useful tips for watching the sunset

Sunset times. Check the exact sunset times in Santorini (usually between 7pm and 8.30pm depending on the season). Arrive 30-40 minutes early to secure a spot.

Transportation. Renting a car, scooter or a quad bike will give you more freedom to visit remote places.

What to bring. Blanket, water, light snacks and a camera to capture the perfect evening.

Weather. Evenings can be chilly in spring and autumn, so bring a jacket.

Santorini is not only Oia. Imerovigli, Akrotiri, Pyrgos, Megalochori or a cruise in the caldera offer equally breathtaking sunsets in a quiet and secluded atmosphere. Choose one of these spots to experience the magic of the island without the crowds.
