Authentic vs Touristy Santorini Cafes.

When you’re out and about in Santorini, especially during hot summer days, and might not be ready for a full meal, but just a quick bite and a coffee to recharge your inner batteries, a visit to a local café might be just what you need.

Cafés here fall into two categories: authentic ones, where locals gather for a traditional Greek coffee and eat homemade food away from the crowds, and touristy ones, with stunning views of the caldera, Instagram worthy interiors, and an atmosphere perfect for a romantic getaway.

Both types are beautiful in their own way: at the former, you’ll experience the true Greek way of life, while at the latter, you’ll enjoy the views that make Santorini unique. Here are a few examples of each.

Authentic Cafés. For locals and those who appreciate authenticity

These places are often hidden in quiet villages like Emporio or Pyrgos, away from the main tourist path. They offer less pretentiousness, but more warmth, tradition and affordable prices.

To Kafenedaki tou Emboriou. A tiny traditional café, hidden in the maze of ancient streets of the old castle of Emporio. This is a true “kafeneio”, a place where locals drink coffee, socialize, and enjoy Greek cuisine. The atmosphere is cozy and non-commercial, with an emphasis on simple yet delicious dishes and traditional Greek coffee. Ideal for those looking for a taste of everyday island life.

Vothonaki, one of the most traditional cafés on the island, maintaining a local character. Located in the small village of Vothonas in the centre of the island, it offers classic Greek drinks, fresh juices and traditional snacks. Come here for one of the best spinach pies (spanakopita) on the island.

Penelope’s Ouzeri. A gem in the quiet village of Pyrgos. A small café with excellent coffee, best Greek salad and a relaxed atmosphere. Locals and those seeking authenticity return here repeatedly. Amazing views all day long and even better sunset.

Touristy Cafés. For those who are all about the views and atmosphere.

For a more of that “postcard Santorini” feel, head over to the villages located on the cliff side, with panoramic views of the volcano and caldera.

Galini Cafe in Firostefani. Overlooking the caldera, this cliff side cafe offers stunning views of the volcano and the sea. An excellent choice for breakfast, brunch, sunset cocktails, or a light dinner. Very popular due to its quiet location and atmosphere.

Terpsi n Oia (Blue Domes Cafe & Restaurant) offers incredible views of the iconic Three Blue Domes and the caldera. Perfect for coffee, desserts and photos. A true oasis to escape the busy streets of Oia in the midday. The baklava and salads are out of this world.

Enigma Cafe offers a relaxing atmosphere in the heart of Fira with breathtaking caldera views serving coffee, brunch, soft drinks & cocktails. Here you can enjoy the sunset and unwind after a day of exploring the island.

Santorini is a balance between tourist buzz and a quiet Greek way of life. Combine both types of cafés to fully experience the island!
