Secret Swimming Spots or Non-Touristy Beaches in Santorini
(from a Local)

If you’re planning to escape the hustle and bustle of Santorini’s main towns during your visit to the island, the best way to do it is plan a day to the beach. And although Santorini is not known for its pristine white sand shores, the volcanic history of the island and the black sand make a visit to one of the local beaches that more memorable.

The famous black sand beaches of Kamari and Perissa are a must visit, as they host some of the best traditional taverns and beach activities on the island. But if you’re looking for more hidden, quieter, remote beaches, here are your top choises.

Koloumbo beach is a real secret spot, hidden by nature. It can only be reached on foot from the main road, which makes it one of the most secluded places on the island. The beach is not developed, no restaurants or cafes are around, so you will have to bring your own beach towel and refreshments if you’re planning to spend the day here.

Mesa Pigadia is a secluded beach, close to the famous White Beach. Covered in dark volcanic sand and pebbles, it is surrounded by impressive cliffs, creating an atmosphere of privacy. The beach is partly organized, there are a few sun loungers and umbrellas next to Mesa Pigadia tavern, where you can enjoy fresh fish and other local dishes. The beach can be reached by car from the road to the Akrotiri lighthouse.

If you take the left turn too early, you might end up at another wonderful location, Kambia beach. This long stretch of rocky shore, with sandy parts on both ends, is close to the much more popular and sometimes overcrowded Red Beach. Here you will definitely find a secluded spot away from everyone, and all you’ll be able to hear are the waves. Sun lounges are available at the start of the beach, close to Temeteron, a family run tavern that serves amazing sea food.

Gialos beachis located on the caldera side. You’ll have to drive down a winding road to reach it. It features stunning views of the volcano and the surrounding cliffs and a few trees offer natural shade. This pebble beach extends for about 250 meters along the coast.

Monolithos close to the airport is one of the most popular beaches with the locals. But the secret is, the farther north you go, the less crowded it gets. Keep walking past Santorini Kite Shop and Neoma Luxury Suites, the hotel that looks like a venetian fortress, and in no time you will find yourself the only person on this stretch of the beach. The white cliffs provide much needed shade in the afternoon.

Visiting any secluded beach in Santorini means non-existent or limited amenities, so make sure to bring enough water and snacks for the day. Beach shoes are recommended, as some locations can be pretty rocky. And don’t forget the sun screen, bright red sun burns won’t look that great in your photos! Or better yet, plan your beach day after your Santorini photo shoot!
