Exploring the villages of Santorini – Jessa and David.

Exploring the villages of Santorini – Jessa and David.

Jessa and David came all the way from Arizona, but there’s more than that – their roots are in Europe and actually from the area not far from Santorini. Jessa has some Greek blood and David’s ancestors come from Italy. As soon as I saw them I understood – they have a connection. A connection to this place and even stronger one to each other.

We spent the most magical two hours around the various villages in Santorini. It seemed that we needed to soak in as much of the Greek ambience as possible, so we did the best we could to get a good range of images and feelings. We ended up taking some shots around Imerovigli, Oia and also sneeked in their hotel called Kirini Suites and their spa.

This is one special couple, no doubt and I hope that these images do them justice and convey the unique vibe of love around them.

GET THE LOOK – TIPS FOR PHOTO SESSION OUTFITS

GET THE LOOK – TIPS FOR PHOTO SESSION OUTFITS

There is a high interest on what to wear to a photo shoot in Santorini to look amazing. Over the years I have found out some things that work and some things that don’t, especially in couples’ photo shoots. Let this serve as a guide, not a definite road map for your choices.

The basics

Dressing up for a photo shoot is something we tend to overdo, the main point to remember is to stay true to your own style – you will simply look better in clothes that you feel comfortable in. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with dressing up and rocking a cool skirt or dress, but do not overdo it and try too hard. Same goes for colours – wear tones that make you feel in sync with yourself. One thing to keep in mind is that the clothes should fit you perfectly – we’re aiming for the tailored look to underline you personality!

The same is especially true for guys. No button-ups if your significant other usually wears cool brand sweaters. Think about it – if you’re on a couples’ photoshoot already, his wardrobe choices are not so bad, right?

Go easy on the prints

It’s safer not to go overboard with various prints, especially if they are words – if your t-shirt says something on it, it very often becomes the central point of interest in the image. Same should be said for patterns, try not to dress all in patterns, rather use it to accentuate. If you have to match patterns, make sure that they are of different scales.

Crash course in making your arms look awesome

Each of us has that spot on the body you wish could look better. For most of us, it’s just in our head and no one else even notices, but my experience shows that the key of looking beautiful is FEELING beautiful, so this has to be solved. Your photo session can even be a therapy to make you understand your true beauty.

Quite a few of us struggle with the way our arms look in photographs. As this advice shows, most often it is more connected to what you actually wear on the photo shoot – you must understand that some types of clothing just makes your hands look a bit awkward on camera, it’s that simple.

One of the most basic advice is just to choose a dress or top with quarter sleeves – it can be an elegant and stylish way to draw more attention to your face (which makes photographs more personal, in fact). Sleeves also optically make us look taller and slimmer, beware of the effect and use it to your advantage to look your best on camera.

If you still want to show some skin, go for it and uncover your shoulders, off-shoulders clothes are a bit more dramatic on photographs and add a pinch of originality. It’s also a good idea to accentuate the parts of your body you are proud of, like waist line in a tight dress or face with big earrings or an impressive necklace.

You can also dress in layers, which is actually what locals also do to level out the difference of temperature during the day and night. It’s usually done like this – find your favorite dress and combine it with a cute jacket, crop top or shrug. A big scarf that you wear on your shoulders can also do the trick. And of course don’t forget the classics – dark tones make you look slimmer.

 The most important secret

Have fun, really. Don’t overthink this, the main thing is to take as much as possible from this amazing experience of you and your lover being on the island.  Nothing makes you look better than being happy.

Ashley and Mark’s pre wedding shoot

Ashley and Mark’s pre-wedding shoot

Oh the stresses of a wedding- making guest lists, arranging the venue, and even making millions of decisions like the color of the flowers all add up quickly. But it can be different when you elope. But don’t take my word for it, here’s what Ashley had to say:

The flowers were the wrong color, but when you are in Santorini, WHO CARES :). It was SOOO beautiful!

I’m glad I was a part of their elopement journey. I had the opportunity to see their eyes and hearts light up in their first look. It was amazing how much trust I got from the couple to capture the intimate moments. While Mark was waiting on the roof Zenith Blue Hotel in Imerovigli (http://zenithblue.gr/) I helped Ashley with the dress. When I got to the roof it was a signal to Mark – it was time. He turned away just to see his beautiful bride in front of him seconds later.

To be honest, it is hard to have bad pictures with such a radiant and loving couple. Their energy and love captured me and I just held on to this wave as I captured these. I really feel all the work paid off when I received this sweet email:

I think we definitely did the best thing :) We explored, we had fun, and it was SO romantic. We had the best time, and we still talk about it all the time. Plus, EVERYONE LOVES YOUR PICTURES. People say how they wish you lived here. :)

Well Ashley, thank you but my heart is still in the magical island of Santorini.
I wish you the very best and I’m waiting for you to come back for your anniversary.

SOME BEHIND THE SCENES OF MY PHOTO SHOOTS

SOME BEHIND THE SCENES OF MY PHOTO SHOOTS

Today I thought I should share some of the information of what to expect when you sign up for a photo shoot and share some of the behind the scenes and give some advice of what to bring with you etc.

Be prepared that your photo session is going to be an adventure and as a real adventure. Santorini summers get quite hot – ideally bring a hat and definitely bring a water bottle. Photo sessions usually involve walking between the locations and you might have to do some climbing as well – it’s all worth it to get the perfect shot! That’s why you should think about an extra pair of shoes (ladies especially, the Santorini cobble stone streets are not perfect for heels).

Usually you’ll have to hold a comfortable pose to get the right shot – Santorini gets really windy (which allows for artistic effect), but some time might be needed to get the perfect whirl of your dress, hair etc. What we’re looking for is that decisive moment where you have the feeling like you’re on top of the world. In the windy days a long dress is the most comfortable and the best option for feeling and looking good. So if you want a short dress for the photo shoot it would be good to have two options in case of those crazy winds.

All in all, if you just prepare a bit and have a relaxed attitude, these photo sessions are a great opportunity to explore some of the glorious sights of Santorini and have a new experience with your loved one.

We’re well on our way in 2017 and I’ve been busy with shooting and planning to make this year even more awesome than the last. Today I just wanted to thank each and every one of you for being a part of my growth journey on this small Greek island in the Aegean Sea- Santorini.

INTIMATE WEDDING VOWS AT THE FOOT OF THE SKAROS ROCK

INTIMATE WEDDING VOWS AT THE FOOT OF THE SKAROS ROCK

This adventure began with the kindest words any photographer could receive. Melorie and Michael were going to have an intimate wedding vow exchange here in Santorini and wrote Both of our families have been all over your website, telling us how beautiful your photos are! They are so excited that you are taking the photos! It makes them feel better about not going with us. Well, after this I knew I had to put all my effort in. Just the kind of thing I’m working for – saving precious moments and memories for relatives, couples and the generations to come. It was really an honor to be chosen to be a part of this special moment.

Before the big day, they also wanted to explore the island and get some photographs out of it. Could not be more perfect. They were really excited about two locations in particular – Oia Village & the Skaros Rocks. Not only was this a good way to relax and get to know each other a bit, the images turned out great!

Our adventure began next to their hotel Alta Mare. After a short conversation it was clear that this couple has a special creative spark and I had the feeling that this is going to be a great. We had a small walk in Oia and then headed to take some first look shots on this gorgeous balcony. Then it was time to visit the Scaros Rock and have some other shots along the way.

Then they saw the spot, it was like an instant connection – they knew they wanted to exchange their vows at this exact spot. So they did. And I had the joy and responsibility of capturing it. Only wind, mountains, nature and the two of them. It was magical.

AMAZING SOUTH AFRICAN COUPLE DISCOVER SANTORINI

AMAZING SOUTH AFRICAN COUPLE DISCOVER SANTORINI

Even if you’re not getting married here, marriage still brings a lot of amazing couples here to this small love island in the Aegean Sea. This was exactly what happened with Tanja and Xander – they came all the way from South Africa for the wedding of their friends.

We chose to take some shots of the view that can be found close to their hotel. Yes – you don’t have to spend hours on a trip to get to see awesome places in Santorini! It turned out to be a windy day, which added that little bit of extra magic to the feel of the photo shoot. The fact that Tanja is making her own dresses was like icing on the cake. Of course, we had to have a bit of patience to get that perfect shot with hair and dress blowing in the wind, but it was totally worth it.

A gorgeous girl in an original dress with her charming man at the Cliffside – it never gets old! They shared a special connection. The one that surrounds yourself with positive and warm energy when you’re around them, even in the strongest winds.

JOCELYN AND CHRIS – THE SWEETEST COUPLE!

JOCELYN AND CHRIS – THE SWEETEST COUPLE!

Recently I had the opportunity to work with yet another sweet and loving couple. And they chose the 90 minute photo session so that we could walk to all the most iconic landmarks of Santorini bathed in the warm sunset light. What a treat for the photographer and the couple alike!

They had eloped in Spain in July and chose Santorini as their honeymoon destination! Plus, they had found a place on Airbnb. Your European dream is possible with a bit of planning!

As we were not in a rush, we managed to get the iconic shots in the bright Santorini sunlight as well as more laid back and moody ones as the sun set. We took photographs next to the Blue Church, Caldera view, Skaros Rock, volcano view and the path next to the Caldera.

Here’s some feedback that brought immense joy to me,

“We just looked at them and oh my! They are gorgeous. Thank you so much for your wonderful work. It’s hard to believe that’s us.  We love them so much. We want to thank you for making it such a fun shoot! We were both nervous and you made us feel at ease. So thank you!! It means so much to us.”

THE PERFECT HONEYMOON SESSION IN SANTORINI

THE PERFECT HONEYMOON SESSION IN SANTORINI

Not only is Santorini the perfect place for your wedding, it is a wonderful honeymoon destination as well. This was the case for this wonderful couple I had the joy of photographing recently. I got a firsthand experience of their romantic adventure in Thera. Laura’s husband had the perfect plan — they spent the first part of the day in the hotel and I tried to stay low and capture the magic between them. Afterwards they had planned a honeymoon dinner in Andronis Luxury Suites. My jaw almost dropped when I saw how amazing they look — she had even brought her wedding dress along! I must say that it seemed that Santorini staged the sunset for these two people that evening, these moments were out of this world! It was clear that their spark is still kindling, without a doubt.

Best artworks are born spontaneously and why not do something crazy on your wedding photo session? Organizing a trash the dress session is a great way to get stunning and unforgettable images of your wedding gown and have tons of fun and adventures while doing it. Santorini is a place to be adventurous!
Trash you dress sessions are usually organised a couple of days after your wedding or on your honeymoon. The possibilities are endless! How about standing on the cliff with Santorini caldera view? Maybe you want to experience hiking in a wedding dress? You can do all of that once you let your imagination loose and experiment.
I’m all up for trash the dress photo sessions; do not hesitate to contact me! We can make all your wild ideas come true or find some interesting things to do if you haven’t yet made up your mind. Santorini is ready for your wedding dress adventure!

THOUGHTS ON SANTORINI PRIVATE DESTINATION WEDDINGS

SOME THOUGHTS ON SANTORINI PRIVATE DESTINATION WEDDINGS

Hey, I’m glad you stumbled upon this post! If you’re reading this you’re most probably considering your Santorini private destination wedding. Let me give you just some quick pointers before your decision. These are just some things to consider.

  • Total freedom to do what you want on your wedding day
You don’t have to adhere to any norms or other official ceremonies, what you do on your wedding day is really up to you! Since you’ll be the only wedding guests, you can get very wild and creative. Maybe you want to get married and go diving all day long? Or maybe you want to spend the whole day in a restaurant or hiking the island? There are no limits, really.
  • Stress-free
It will be less stressful as there are no official strict schedules to follow etc. It’s just about you two and the things you enjoy most
  • No family and friends by your side
This is simultaneously the best and the worst thing of such a type of wedding. You’re not so stressed because you don’t have crowds of people; however, you won’t have your closest friends and family by your side as well. There is a solution to this, see point 4.
  • You can organise a small pre-wedding ceremony back home!
Lots of couples opt to take the best from two worlds and just make a small celebration the day before they’re coming to Santorini. It is usually a small gathering of the closest friends and family and it is quite relaxed. Off course, you can get really formal — it’s up to you!
  • Getting creative with your look and wedding photos!
Who says you have to have a white dress and tuxedo? We usually tend to stick to tradition when we’re holding big ceremonies, but this could be the occasion to get creative! Maybe you want a ping Greek style dress? The same goes for your wedding photo session; you could go on a hike to a mountain and have it there if you want to!

Hope this helps you make up your mind. Regardless of the type of wedding you want to have, Santorini is definitely a good choice for romantic trips, weddings and honeymoons — this is probably one of the most romantic spots on earth!

WEDDING VENUES IN SANTORINI

WEDDING VENUES IN SANTORINI

To start off I must say that there are tons of wedding venues in Santorini, Greece. You really can find any type of venue for any kind of wedding ideas you might have. This is just a small list to get you started. So here goes:

  1. First of all, all of the island could potentially become your wedding venue, especially if you’re eloping. Couples who want an intimate ceremony often choose to get married on the caldera or in a remote beach etc. only with a couple of their closest friends or no guests at all.
  2. The second option is to choose one the hotels available in Santorini. Almost every hotel here has a wedding venue offer, so you can really browse around and find your perfect place for the occasion. Here’s my post on the five things your perfect Santorini hotel should have to get you started.
  3. The third option is to choose one of the wedding organisers working on the island. They have years of experience in finding wedding venues to suit every need. If you choose this option, you will only need to know the number of guests and the type of ceremony you prefer (relaxed or formal etc.). These agencies could potentially get you into some private property which would be hard to reach otherwise.

So these are your three main options when it comes to choosing a wedding venue in Santorini, Greece. All in all, it helps if you just ask around and explore your options before settling for a concrete venue, so you could consider all three of these options before your final decision.

Hope this helps to clear it up a bit and good luck with your wedding plans!

GREEK WEDDING GOWNS

What to wear for your wedding!? Of course, this has been and always will be a question of high importance in all times and all cultures. Although times have changed, it’s still very important to observe some traditions when getting ready for your Greek wedding. I am no wedding expert; however, I have attended quite a few weddings and have done some wedding photo sessions, so I might have a couple of pointers.

Of course, the bride is always the centre of attention, but there is some etiquette to be observed for the guys as well. There is a Greek tradition that the grooms friends gather to help get him ready on the big day. The most important friend – the best man of the koumbaro – will shave the groom. This symbolizes the mutual trust and friendship between them. All the other friends help the groom to get dressed – button his shirt, help him put the jacket on etc. to symbolically help him get ready to enter a new phase of his life. The CEREMONY of getting ready is a special one for men, other than that there usually are no special rules for WHAT to wear; a sleek dark suit will do, although you might skip wearing a tie. Usually you would get rid of the jacket during the party if your wedding is in the blistering summer heat. Be sure to wear comfortable, yet elegant shoes – there’s lots of dancing in Greek weddings!

There is also a special tradition the bride should observe while getting ready. It is customary that the friends help the bride to get dressed as well. The bride then writes the names of her unmarried friends on the soles of her shoes. The belief is that the friends whose names will have faded out till the end of the wedding party will soon get married themselves. Once the bride is dressed, she has to look back at her parent’s house when leaving – it is believed that so she can ensure that the children take after her side of the family. Brides usually wear simple, elegant, flowing Greek style dresses – it’s really the best choice for this weather. However, there is one piece of clothing which is the most important – SHOES! The ceremonies are usually held in small chapels to which you have to get through small, winding cobblestone streets (very often you have to walk), there is lots of walking and dancing throughout the day, you will most probably have a wedding photo session, very often it would involve some climbing etc. What I’m trying to say is – choose really comfortable shoes! Maybe it’s worth choosing a smaller heal, your feet will thank you later!

As you might have noticed, there are no strict rules governing WHAT to wear for your wedding, but what’s important is HOW you wear it and HOW you get ready. Of course, you should ask the church if they have some extra demands. Greeks usually do not get overly fancy, elegance and comfort is valued when choosing wedding gowns, and it’s for a reason. Believe me, love is beautiful enough, you don’t need to spend a million on your dress.
